Description

This workshop will examine the range of narcissistic injuries to the developing self that underpins narcissism, how this manifests in therapeutic practice and essential strategies of how to work with traumatic narcissism. It will identify how early trauma, narcissistic abuse and shame committed by narcissists impact the developing child and how that can lead to narcissistic traits as a defence against these early wounds to the self. The focus will be on resourcing participants with essential strategies to work with traumatized, or vulnerable narcissists by linking their narcissistic traits to early childhood trauma and exploring the function of narcissistic traits as a defence against chronic shame and as a protective survival strategy to preserve any sense of self. Through the use of trauma-informed practice, emotional dysregulation, compassion, empathy, mentalisation, therapeutic humility and epistemic justice participants will learn skills that will enable traumatised narcissistic clients to reclaim their authentic sense of self.
